The electrification rate in Indonesia is around 82%, i.e. around 40 million people live without access to an electricity supply (as of 2014). KfW is supporting the Indonesian electricity supplier PLN in its endeavours to improve the electrification rate in the face of sharply rising electricity demand and to increase the share of electricity from hydropower generation in the energy mix.Small hydropower plants can make an important contribution to improving the electricity supply, particularly in off-grid areas or in so-called mini-grids. They replace or supplement diesel-based power generation and enable the expansion of the power supply.

Tractebel Hydroprojekt prepared feasibility studies for small hydropower plants for a total of 6 locations in various regions of Indonesia. In addition to the technical planning, extensive environmental and social studies (ESIA) must also be carried out and the economic and financial feasibility of the projects must be analysed. The feasibility studies form the basis for possible financing of the projects by KfW.
