The river valleys of the Osterzgebirge were and are often affected by devastating floods - for example in 1897, 1958, 2002 and 2013. After the 2002 flood, a flood protection concept was drawn up for the Rote Weißeritz river basin. Among other things, this provides for the construction of a flood retention basin in the Pöbeltal valley.
