Wesel-Datteln-Kanal – Contract signed for planning services for the extension

Vertrag Wesel-Datteln-Kanal

The contract for the planning services for the extension of the Wesel-Datteln Canal (WDK) was signed in mid-July 2023. Together with our long-standing planning partners, we are thus giving the go-ahead for the project and structural planning for the development of the approximately 40 km long canal section from the Rhine to Marl (km 0 to km 40).

The aim is to ensure that this section is future-proof and safe for modern ship dimensions, i.e. large motorized cargo ships (GMS) and pushed convoys (SV), and thus to increase transport capacity via the WDK. The urgency/bottleneck elimination (VB-E) classification in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 shows an urgent need for the W23 project. The project is located within the core network of federal waterways. The Wesel-Datteln Canal is classified as category A in accordance with its traffic importance.
