Successful repair of an accident damage at the Lock Riedenburg

After a passenger ship damaged the lower lock gate of the Riedenburg lock on the Main-Danube Canal on the evening of June 5, 2019, the Stemmtor could no longer be closed. Ship traffic on the entire Main-Danube Canal came to a standstill. In the meantime, 115 ships had to take a "forced break" and the traffic jam extended to more than 200 km.

The approach of the passenger ship damaged the edge protection as well as the associated sealing surface of the lower gate. After the 190 m long, 12 m wide and 13.4 m deep lock chamber had been emptied after the setting of inspection closures, the Waterways and Shipping Office (WSA) Donau MDK was able to assess the damage. On a length of more than 5 m, the edge protection as well as the anchorage were torn from the solid structure of the lock chamber.

The SBE Magdeburg division of Tractebel Hydroprojekt GmbH was commissioned at short notice to evaluate the new edge protection for the lower gate from a constructive point of view and to provide static proof of the new design. The special feature was the narrow period between planning, testing and execution. Within a few days, the construction was statically proven and manufactured almost in parallel. Particular attention was also paid to the respective assembly states. Due to the production and delivery times of the components, the first intermediate spacings were already transmitted during the calculation and the production was carried out based on it.

Thanks to the smooth and error-free cooperation between the participating companies and the WSA Donau MDK, the lock was able to be put back into operation within 14 days of damage to the edge protection after the lock gate had been aligned and a test pass. Be. The irony of fate was not long in coming, just a week and a half after the lower gate was repaired, an edge protection was damaged again at the upper gate, which meant that the lock had to be taken out of service again for a week.
