The state agency for flood protection Saxony-Anhalt plans to increase flood protection in the Area of Calbe (Saale). In June 2020, Tractebel Hydroprojekt GmbH was awarded the contract for the planning services for the repair of the Saale dike in the section between deich-km 0.0 and Deich-km 3.5. The entire project area is located in the estuary of the Saale into the Elbe. During the 2013 flood event, there were significant pressure and smoke water leaks. Large-scale wetings occurred in the villages of Calbe (Saale) and Tornitz. The existing pre-floodwaters were not able to dissipate the resulting amounts of water without damage. Furthermore, it was found that the only occasional accessibility of the dike system represents a significant defect in the dye defense. In addition, the flood protection system does not comply with the current regulations (DIN 19172). In order to eliminate the existing deficits, a remediation is therefore urgently needed.

The plan is for a 1,750 m long DIN-compliant dike refurbishment in the existing route and a 1,250 m long dike re-laying. The refurbishment is carried out with a defense path on the landside dike ridge and a control path on the crown. A new dye construction in an alternative route is planned for the dike re-laying. With the realization of the dike re-laying, the previous flood protection system can be shortened by around 500 m. In addition, the resulting widening improves the hydraulic performance of the halls. The budget for the project is around EUR 4.5 million. In December 2020, the preliminary planning was handed over to the client. The implementation of the plan is planned for the end of 2025.
