Flood protection meets open space planning

Lutherstadt Wittenberg envisages a municipal flood protection system in the outlying centre of Kleinwittenberg in order to close an existing gap in flood protection on the Elbe. At the same time, the flood protection system secures the residential area "Am Stadthafen" planned in this section and replaces a listed quay wall that is no longer permanently stable.

Between the planned bank wall and the actual flood protection wall, an accident and maintenance path, with everyday use as a bike and footpath, is planned. Here the supra-regional Elbe cycle path is laid. In addition, this complex serves as a prelude to the harbor promenade of the "city on the Elbe". Generously planned terraces with stairs and seating areas serve the stay and strolling for residents and tourists, including excursion boat trips.

The open spaces are kept in a factual style: large-format concrete slabs and block steps in light gray, plus large paving bands made of granite as tactile elements for accessibility. Splashes of color form blue and turquoise seat pads and seat elements made of polystyrene rigid foam. Railings and fall protection, also on the shore bund wall, are coordinated with each other made of anthracite-colored flat steels with handrail made of brushed stainless steel. A few small-crowned  trees, white-flowering rock pears with red autumn coloring and a lawn terrace under a row of linden trees increase the quality of stay and flatter the open space planner's heart.
