Since November 2019, the Structural and Authorisation Directorate North, Regional Office for Water Management, Waste Management and Soil Protection Trier has been implementing the measures to upgrade the approximately 1.5 km long flood protection systems in Trier between the Römerstadt Youth Hostel and the access to the RATIO shopping centre.
The height of the flood defences will not be changed in the course of the upgrade in order not to cause a deterioration of the flood risk in neighbouring areas and on the opposite shore. With the installation of the pile walls on a length of approx. 280 m in the dike section with a tree avenue, the protection of the city of Trier for flood events is guaranteed up to a 50-year probability of recurrence.
On the basis of a tree survey, a compromise could be found for the insertion of a sheet wall as an inner seal in this dike section. A local expert's office monitored the vibrations in the neighbouring buildings while the sheet walls were brought in.
The new defense path will be moved to the land side on the existing wide dike crown. The dike embankment is intercepted here with angular support walls. In the vicinity of trees, height-adjustable root bridges were made of steel gratings. On the approximately 500 m long section, a "promenade" with a water-bound road surface is created on both sides of the tree avenue. The waterside banquet teat is designed as a walk-in green strip.
In the course of the planning, the city's requirement to extend the dike defense path as a cycle expressway was withdrawn. Based on new findings regarding the stress factors for trees as a result of climate change, StadtGrün Trier has suggested optimizing the previous efforts to preserve trees, so that the path is extended with a paving ceiling instead of an asphalt ceiling.
Along the wall of the outdoor swimming pool North, the existing dike defense path was widened to 3.5 m and intercepted on the water side with angular elements. At the end of September, the partial acceptance and release of the first view of the dike crown with dike defense path and promenade section of approx. 600 m length is planned, so that this area between the Römerstadt-Youth Hostel and the outdoor swimming pool Nordwieder can be used by pedestrians and cyclists.
In the other sections, the cable and paving work has been carried out in part. All work is scheduled for completion in March 2021.
