The German Engineering Prize has been awarded four times so far, with the barrage in Greifswald and the Kienlesberg Bridge in Ulm being awarded twice to projects in which we were involved. This year, we would like to submit a project ourselves in coordination with the Wasserstraßen-Neubauamt Berlin.

Like its predecessor, the new Niederfinow boat lift is a unique structure. It is not only its sheer size that is impressive, but also the sophisticated technology and precision in its implementation. Numerous companies from all over Germany were involved in the planning and construction, all of whom made important contributions to the exceptional result.

Since its long-awaited opening in 2022, the ship lift has closed the bottleneck between Berlin and the Polish Baltic Sea port of Szczecin for modern container ships, contributing significantly to making the transport routes to and from the capital sustainable and environmentally friendly. It is a beacon for the importance of this logistics sector, which is unfortunately often neglected and its actual significance not adequately appreciated. Last but not least, the spectacular architectural design of the region's new landmark, which is visible from afar and refers to a nearby medieval sacred building, contributes to the fact that it has become a tourist magnet in addition to its main function.

Regardless of whether our application is successful or not, we are very proud to have been substantially involved in shaping this important cornerstone of German inland navigation. The Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau has published detailed information on the project for interested parties here.

Update: The project has been included in the list of nominees for the German Engineering Award 2024.
